Andrew Smith Hallidie papers and biographical material, 1848-1967.

Consists of letters to Hallidie's wife, Martha Elizabeth (1884-1898); business correspondence (1871-1899); drafts of speeches, printed articles and certificates related to his role as a regent of the University of California and his involvement with the Mechanics' Institute, the American Association of Inventors and Manufacturers, and the Manufacturer's Association; manuscripts and typescripts of narratives relating Hallidie's experiences in various parts of Calif. during the course of his work as an engineer and a gold miner; and newspaper clippings, most of which are obituaries of Hallidie. Includes biographical materials about Hallidie, including an article and bibliography written and published by Edgar M. Kahn in 1953, accompanied by a typed version dated 1952. With these are miscellaneous biographical research notes of unknown origin; a typed copy of the entry on Hallidie from the National Cyclopedia of American Biography, Vol. 7 p. 191, 1897, with revisions; and an official copy of Hallidie's certificate of baptism.
